Role of B vitamins in the Body

Vitamin B1 & B: Vitamin B1, or thiamin, is an important coenzyme that helps the body convert food into energy and assists in manufacturing fat and metabolizing protein. Thiamin is needed to maintain normal function of the nervous system and supports a healthy heart. B2, or riboflavin, works synergistically with other B vitamins to metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
Vitamin B3 & B5: Vitamin B3, or niacin, acts as a coenzyme, assisting other substances in the conversion of food into energy. Niacin works with other vitamins to metabolize food and provide energy to the body. B5, or pantothenic acid, helps the body extract energy from carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It also helps to metabolize fats and produce red blood cells and hormones from the adrenal gland.
Vitamin B6, Folate & Biotin: Vitamin B6 is three substances (pyridoxine, pyridoxamine, and pyridoxal) that work in unison to metabolize protein and amino acids. Folate provides cardiovascular support and also plays a role in the release of serotonin, a key neurotransmitter. Biotin acts as a coenzyme in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, the breaking down of proteins, and the conversion of amino acids from protein into blood sugar for energy.
Vitamin B12: When supplementing with B12 in its most common form, cyanocobalamin, an intrinsic factor made in the stomach must be present in the intestinal tract in significant amounts to allow for the absorption. Low levels of B12 can in many cases be attributed to the body's inability to absorb it. This leads to supplementation becoming ineffective. The best way to increase absorption of vitamin B12 is by taking it in the form of methylcobalamin, due to methylcobalamin B12 not needing an intrinsic factor to be absorbed.*
